The Illinois state marching band championships at U of I in Champaign is one of my favorite Saturdays of the year. As a former band kid, (7+ years of clarinet) who marched at U of I many years ago myself, seeing the culmination of everything thousands of kids across the state have worked for, and the final time many of them will ever be on the field for competition, feels momentous.
