I’ve been talking about starting a non-profit that helps give children & youth in the Peoria area access to music and instruments for a long time now. I had no idea how quickly the idea would be propelled by the purchase of the building that Peoria Music Live is moving to, but here we are… and we take possession of the building on Thursday!
So, now I’m going to officially introduce you to Harmonize Peoria!
So many people have unused instruments laying around. We will be able to find new users and owners who will use them for their original purpose, making music!
While there are many steps between here and having the program fully functional and running, we have already filed all of our paperwork, started making plans, and have even arranged to accept donated instruments from a few different sources. We hope to start serving the community with music programming by April 2022.
Our Goals:
To give those we serve exposure, education, and access to all genres of music
To give those we serve who are interested in music, access to small group and private music lessons
To give those we serve, who commit to learning how to play an instrument, avenues to owning instruments through program participation & volunteer work.
And while it’s not an official goal, this organization was designed with the belief that youth who have a creative outlet and are part of an organized program that encourages goal-setting and provides some accountability, are less likely to find themselves in dangerous and violent situations.
We look forward to sharing the gift of music with those in our community who want to learn and participate. Many of our programs will include adults and we encourage family participation, but our focus is on the children and youth of the Peoria area.
And before anyone wonders if they have the talent to participate, or how we’ll decide who has the most talent, we want them to know that this isn’t about that. Anyone can make music. If they make the commitment, we’ll do our best to give them the opportunity to follow through.
As Harmonize Peoria gets on its feet, many of Peoria Music Live’s resources will be poured into the organization. So anything you can do to help Peoria Music Live will benefit Harmonize Peoria as well.
